Automate Webpage-to-PNG with ConvertFileAPI

This article shows how to turn webpage captures into a repeatable workflow with ConvertFileAPI. The public site converts one URL or HTML file at a time: send a page to URL to PNG or HTML to PNG, download the PNG or ZIP, and store it in your own system. There is no public REST endpoint yet. For bulk jobs or a private endpoint, contact ConvertFileAPI.

What ConvertFileAPI provides

ConvertFileAPI converts Office files, PDFs, images, video, audio, web pages, Markdown, and SVG. Web tools include HTML to PNG, URL to PDF, URL to PNG, and Markdown to PNG. Files are deleted after conversion.

URL to PNG and HTML to PNG

  • URL to PNG: screenshot the full page. Long pages download as a ZIP of PNGs.
  • HTML to PNG: capture an HTML file. Use this when you render markup yourself and only send the final HTML.

Choose the right approach

1) Direct URL screenshot

When the page is publicly reachable, use URL to PNG. You get a faithful screenshot of the rendered page. Long pages may return several PNGs in a ZIP.

Use this when the page is already on the web and you do not need to log in.

2) Render locally, then convert HTML

If the page needs private data, user-specific rendering, or CSS you cannot expose as a public URL, render HTML on your side, then convert with HTML to PNG.

Use this when the page requires authentication or you want exact control over markup before capture.

3) Markdown to PNG

If the content starts as Markdown, use Markdown to PNG for documentation screenshots, cards, or social images.

Typical steps

  1. Decide: URL to PNG, HTML to PNG, or Markdown to PNG.
  2. Prepare the URL or HTML file.
  3. Convert on ConvertFileAPI.
  4. Download a PNG or a ZIP of PNGs for long pages.
  5. Save the file in your storage. The site deletes files after conversion.
  6. Retry if the page blocked the capture or failed to load.

Patterns you can adapt

Simple URL capture

Validate the URL, convert with URL to PNG, persist the PNG or ZIP, and log the result. Keep this on a machine you control so you decide what gets captured.

User-submitted HTML

Sanitize HTML, convert with HTML to PNG, and store the PNG. Inline assets if the converter cannot load them from the network.

Bulk jobs

Queue URLs, process them one at a time on the public site, or ask about volume if you need a private conversion endpoint. Handle ZIP responses as well as single PNGs.

Long pages

Inspect whether the download is a PNG or a ZIP. Extract ZIP members and store them, or combine them later. Plan storage around multiple files for long articles.

Errors and reliability

  • Validate URLs and HTML before converting.
  • Log failures. Some sites block automated browsers.
  • The public site is built for testing. Confirm limits before high-volume use.

Security

  • Only convert pages you are allowed to capture.
  • For private content, prefer HTML to PNG after you render locally.
  • Do not treat the conversion site as long-term storage. Files are deleted after conversion.

Where it fits in a stack

ConvertFileAPI is the conversion step: URL or HTML in, PNG or ZIP out. Serverless jobs, background workers, and content pipelines can trigger a capture, then keep the file in your object storage. Credentials and quotas stay on your side.

Checklist

  • Public page → URL to PNG. Private markup → HTML to PNG.
  • Accept a single PNG or a ZIP of PNGs.
  • Log attempts and failures.
  • For scale, contact ConvertFileAPI rather than assuming a public API.

Minimal flow

  1. A user or job asks for a screenshot of a public URL.
  2. You validate the URL.
  3. You convert with URL to PNG and wait for the download.
  4. You store the PNG or ZIP.
  5. You return a link to your stored copy, not to a temporary file on ConvertFileAPI.

FAQ

What input formats can I use to make a PNG?
Send a URL to URL to PNG, an HTML file to HTML to PNG, or Markdown to Markdown to PNG.
How does ConvertFileAPI handle long pages?
URL to PNG screenshots the full page. Long pages download as a ZIP of PNGs. Your workflow should detect ZIP downloads and extract the files.
Are uploaded files kept after conversion?
No. Files are deleted after conversion. Store anything you need to keep.
Can I convert private or authenticated pages?
The public URL tool cannot log in. Render HTML on your side and use HTML to PNG, or provide a publicly reachable version of the page.
Where do I start if I need programmatic access?
Use the Web pages tools on the site for one-off conversions. For an API or bulk endpoint, contact ConvertFileAPI. There is no public REST API yet.
